Music is a vital part of our curriculum: it nurtures creativity, builds confidence, supports wellbeing, and helps pupils develop a lifelong relationship with the arts. Through practical music-making and purposeful listening, pupils learn to express themselves, collaborate with others, and understand music as a shared language that connects cultures, communities, and generations.
Our music curriculum is delivered through Charanga as the core scheme of work. Charanga provides a progressive, spiral curriculum in which key musical knowledge and skills are revisited and developed over time, ensuring secure understanding and increasing challenge. Pupils experience music through performing, listening, composing, and appraising, with regular opportunities to sing, play, create and reflect. Learning is rooted in high-quality musical examples and builds pupils’ musical vocabulary so they can talk confidently about what they hear and do.
A distinctive feature of our provision is that every child learns a musical instrument, ensuring equity of access and meaningful musical progression. Currently, pupils learn beginner clarinet, developing their technique, musicianship, and ensemble skills over time. Instrumental learning is carefully integrated into classroom music so that pupils apply core musical concepts, such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and timbre, in authentic performance contexts.
We also believe that music should be experienced beyond the classroom. Therefore, all children are given the opportunity to take part in the Young Voices concert, enabling pupils to perform as part of a large-scale choir, experience the excitement of live music-making, and develop confidence, and a strong sense of musical identity.
Through Charanga, whole-class instrumental learning, and enriching performance experiences, we aim to ensure that every pupil leaves our school with the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm to continue engaging with music throughout their lives.
