PE

At our school, Physical Education (PE) is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum. We believe PE helps every child to develop a love of being active, build confidence and learn the life skills that support health and wellbeing. Through high-quality PE, pupils develop physical competence, teamwork, resilience and positive attitudes towards sport and physical activity, encouraging them to stay active now and in the future.

Our approach

We teach PE through a progressive curriculum that builds skills, knowledge and confidence step-by-step. Lessons are designed to help pupils:

  • Develop fundamental movement skills and improve agility, balance, coordination and control
  • Build physical skills and tactics across a range of activities, including games, dance and gymnastics
  • Work collaboratively and competitively, learning fairness, respect and sportsmanship
  • Set goals and reflect on performance, understanding how to improve through practice
  • Understand the importance of an active lifestyle, including the links between movement, fitness and wellbeing

Get Set 4 PE: our chosen scheme

To ensure clear progression, consistent coverage and high-quality teaching across the school, we follow Get Set 4 PE as our scheme of work. This provides well-structured units that develop skills, knowledge and vocabulary progressively, while ensuring lessons are active, inclusive and enjoyable. The scheme supports us to provide:

  • A coherent progression of skills from simple to more complex movements and gameplay
  • Clear learning outcomes with opportunities for children to practise, apply and refine skills
  • Inclusive lesson design, with accessible activities and adaptations to support all learners
  • Regular assessment opportunities, helping teachers identify next steps and celebrate progress

How children learn in PE

PE lessons are purposeful, active and engaging. Children learn through a blend of skill development, practice and application in game or performance contexts. Lessons typically include:

  • Warm-ups and movement preparation, building safe habits and readiness to learn
  • Focused skill teaching, with modelling and clear success criteria
  • Partner and team tasks, developing communication, cooperation and leadership
  • Applying skills in context, such as small-sided games, sequences or routines
  • Reflection and feedback, helping pupils recognise strengths and identify improvements

Children are encouraged to strive for their personal best, developing confidence and resilience as they practise and improve over time.

Inclusion, enjoyment and healthy lifestyles

We want every child to feel successful in PE. Teaching is planned to be inclusive and supportive, with clear steps, adaptations and opportunities for challenge and extension. We also place strong emphasis on enjoyment and wellbeing, helping children build positive experiences of physical activity, develop healthy habits and understand the value of staying active throughout life.
